Real Solutions to Tipping Issue

Wow so many posts about tipping, most just rants without providing solutions. What we all agree on: tipping is explotatiive and based on racist ideology that should be abolished. Solutions recommended: Tip at least *% Not really a solution, since this just keeps the status quo it creates two classes of tipped workers, the highly paid worker vs lowly paid worker as it depends on the type of business you work at punishing customers is unfair by requiring a certain tip as they probably dont go out a lot anyways Don't frequent establishments that rely on a tipped workers The idea is to get business to go “out of business,” which means the worker now loses their jobs. so really what you are promoting is the idea the “worker should find another job” indirectly. Wow so many posts about tipping, most just rants without providing solutions.

What we all agree on: tipping is explotatiive and based on racist ideology that should be abolished.

Solutions recommended:

  1. Tip at least *%
    1. Not really a solution, since this just keeps the status quo
    2. it creates two classes of tipped workers, the highly paid worker vs lowly paid worker as it depends on the type of business you work at
    3. punishing customers is unfair by requiring a certain tip as they probably dont go out a lot anyways
  2. Don't frequent establishments that rely on a tipped workers
    1. The idea is to get business to go “out of business,” which means the worker now loses their jobs. so really what you are promoting is the idea the “worker should find another job” indirectly.
    2. This harms consumers, everyone no matter what you make should be able to go out to eat to a restaurant and enjoy themselves at the prices displayed without feeling shamed for not proving a *% tip( ongoing rate)
  3. Workers not to work at these establishments
    1. Most direct challenge to business owners
    2. This puts the onus on tipped workers to change
  4. Tipping cash
    1. tipped workers usually pool their cash tips.

Fundamentally, the drive to change tipping culture has to come from tipped workers and customers, While the burden wont be equal (unfortunately any system that changes the status quo will burden tipped workers more than consumers).

My proposal:

  1. Have all tipped workers get CASH, Venmo, etc app, or lets just create another app. where consumers can tip the workers directly, removing the business owner, in most cases this will require business owners to pay them minimum wage at the state.
  2. At the same time, not making customers who cant tip feel bad about having a night out as the tip should not be expected.
  3. Lastly, for people who have the means to tip more generously, how about directing that money to a fund that goes to increasing the minimum wage and requiring people are paid minimum wage pre-tip. i.e California
  4. Optionally, lets create another fund that helps tipped workers transition from tips to non-tips
