Requesting vacation time at work got more complicated

There has been some changes at work. My supervisor sent out an email to everyone that she wanted each one of us in office to send her an email with subject line 2023 Preferred Vacation Time. She wanted to know everyone’s planned time off for this year. Then she said she will review it and start sending approval emails. She was going to keep seniority in mind. Before, we could easily send her an email requesting time off. But now it’s like we need to know exact dates for this whole year and this all happened because of last month. Based on her email she did this change to avoid resentment. What happened? Last month our union approved a 3rd floater day and suddenly everyone decided to ask for time off.

My department has 4 people but we have to consider the receptionist of our office because nobody else is able to cover for her. Well 2 people in my unit plus receptionist (all newer folks like me) decided to take time off before Christmas. I already knew I wasn’t taking time off and I only asked for 1 day only because of the 3rd floater day approved. 1 day! I knew that my one coworker staying behind to work wasn’t going to take time off for the holidays because she doesn’t celebrate holidays and I figured it wouldn’t be so bad if she’s alone since I’ve been alone before and handle it fine.

At first my supervisor wanted to deny it because of coverage issues. My coworker then said she was approached by my supervisor to see if she was okay staying alone for that 1 day. I could tell her vibe was off and I don’t know if she was resentful over me asking for 1 day! She could’ve asked for a day too and I wouldn’t have mind covering since nobody gave a f*** when I got left alone before. But again she never planned to take time off around the holidays and we all discussed it amongst ourselves. So I don’t know if she was the resentful one or what. She has been there the longest and I just have a high feeling my supervisor did this change because of her. “Keeping seniority in mind.”

Basically now I’m waiting to hear back for my vacation time approval. I requested first week of March and I need to get it approved. I’ve asked around and nobody is taking time off during that time. I’ve sent my email like 3 days ago and normally I hear back like quickly before but now it’s all crickets. Some coworkers find it ridiculous and aren’t going to send their email with their planned vacation which will delay the supervisor in making decisions. This is stressing me out. I need to know if it will get approved to buy plane tickets, reserve hotel etc. If I don’t hear back by mid month, I’m going to push and ask about it but I’m afraid I’ll get scolded over. This is just ridiculous.
