I've worked at a large financial institution for 19 years, in their tech department. During the pandemic, I was allowed to WFH full time. Also during the pandemic, my wife's mother fell ill, and we had to move in with her so that my wife (a retired teacher) could take care of her. Her house is 101 miles away from my work location–and it's the closest of the company's locations to me.
Now we're all being called back to the office. They're not making an exception for me, even though now I have a two-hour commute each way.
I'm 60: too young to retire (for Social Security) or get Medicare. If I quit, I won't have income or insurance. So, I'm stuck: I either have to wear out my car driving 200 miles a day, or I have to find another job closer to home that won't pay nearly as much.
