Salaried Employee Overtime

I am a salaried employee I would have to check the specifics of my contract, but I was informed when I joined on that the required work hours are from 8-4 every day. Currently my boss wants me to come in early and stay late. The way I look at it they are paying me to get work done between those hours and if I cant its their fault for over booking me. I care greatly about a healthy work life balance. Does anyone know if it is legal for the company to fire me if I refuse to work more than 40 hours per week? If I don't have to work overtime how do I inform my boss that I'm not coming to a 6:30 meeting and staying for a 5:30 meeting the same day? does anyone have experience with this?
