Salary Reviews VS Inflation Vs Managers Pay

Reviews have been fast approaching I have had a good year, even with COVID, where I have grown in my role and taken on other responibilities. As backstory, my old team leader decided to quit just prior to COVID and I was earmarked along with someone else to sort of take on his role in a shared capacity, but in the end the other person ended up taking on that role completely along with even more responsibilities as our GM also moved to semi-retirement. While I was disappointed, I didnt lose any sleep over it. anyways, reviews start up and salary is part of this one as we havent actually had a salary review for 2 years now due to the dreaded pandemic. Reviews have been fast approaching

I have had a good year, even with COVID, where I have grown in my role and taken on other responibilities.

In years gone by (I've been here 8yrs now) I've done better than others in terms of salary increases, but I also think I started on a low, low start point, so in my mind it was just catching up to others.

So a figure is thrown at me…. good but not great given the lack of prior increases and current inflation levels.

I throw back another figure, only slightly above current inflation levels but a good 2 percentage points higher than theirs.

My team leader's response? “Hell if we pay you that, you'll almost be earning as much as me!”

keep in mind I had a fair idea what he would have been receiving prior to his promotion.

I throw back “Well if you're silly enough to accept a massive promotion without appropriate compensation, then that sounds like a you problem, not a me problem.”

suffice to say I didn't get the extra pay, and to top it off, my landlord upped my rent almost to the dollar of my increase amoumt, so effectively I am actually no better off at all.

time to look elsewhere maybe? its tough as I'm at the older end of the workforce, and our job market is not quite as active as what I read in this subreddit. i'm not in 'Murica so the Great Resignation movement is not as strong here
