Serious question: Can anyone explain the contradictory headlines about the recent “labor shortage”?

Maybe I’m out of the loop, but I’m seeing headlines saying 1) There’s a massive labor shortage and companies are desperate for workers. 2) Many of the world’s biggest companies are in the middle of unprecedented mass layoffs of, collectively, hundreds of thousands of workers. So which is it? Are they desperate for workers or not? What’s causing this disconnect? It’s easy to just write it off as “lies / propaganda,” but I feel like that’s a reductive answer. Wtf is actually happening right now with the labor force?
