I'm a new school bus driver, started in mid-May just when schools are winding down. I don't have a route, so have been doing what they call charters – field trips mostly, anything that's not a to/from school thing.
All along, my supervisor (who handles scheduling only for charters) has been telling me as I leave the afternoon before when she needs me the next day. I get it, she's working me in, maybe things change, etc.
Today as I left I asked if there were anything on Monday. She said not yet but she'll call me if she needs me. Sigh. So I head to my car.
Halfway there, she pops out the office door. “PLATY!”
Huh?
“Aren't you working tomorrow?”
No. I wasn't scheduled to work so I made plans.
She didn't quite know what to make of that.
I'm sure that the schools needing a bus for a field trip don't try to make arrangements the day before. There's no reason for her to last-minute this every day.
Even a week ahead would be better!
(Oh, and while their job listing on Indeed says there's a $2500 hiring bonus for new drivers, when I asked how long before that shows up in a paycheck the office gal said it is paid out after a driver has been doing a route for 30 days. So I wouldn't get it until fall, and that's only if I do a route. Back to looking for work.)
