So I've been working in the hotel industry for a little while now, and at this particular hotel for roughly a year and a half. The manager's assistant, who happens to be holding somewhat of a hybrid position (still doing shifts behind the desk, but also doing all the work the manager is too lazy to do, which is a lot) is a dick.
A major one. Doesn't say hello when she arrives in the morning, and attacks you right away on whatever she can find to make your day shitty. You're drowning in emails and calls and bookings but you haven't replied to this email that you received less than a minute ago yet? How dare you be so unproductive and unmotivated. You think you're doing a good job? Here's a list of all the little nothings that were not done exactly the way I want it yesterday and the day before and the day before, really this is unacceptable. She's constantly nagging us and yelling at us for the tiniest of things, no empathy or respect whatsoever, and a nightmare to work with.
Long story short, I've reached the point where I can't take it anymore, and I'm quitting. Before that though, I had a discussion with the manager, who I thought I was in good terms with. I wanted to see whether he would possibly consider promoting me, since I've been working for him for quite some time now, despite the obviously harsh working environment. I wanted to see what he would say. And his response was: I can't promote someone who doesn't like their job.
Nevermind that he himself hates his job, nevermind the absurdity of his statement, and nevermind that I provided so many of our guests with good service and good care over the months. Nevermind that his assistant makes it impossible for you to even like your job. I was deemed unworthy of being promoted. No love for an industry that pays like shit and breaks you a little more every day.
And so I handed him my resignation letter, giving the guy two months to find someone to replace me, instead of just one as is mandatory here. Despite everything, I still step into his shoes and give him a comfortable two months to find another employee. I let him know though that working in this environment long term is impossible and that, should they continue to tolerate the horrible behaviour of his assistant, more people will be leaving the boat, and it will get increasingly harder to recruit new employees.
A week later, I get told by the same manager that they've decided to strip me off my mid-year bonus (around 900 dollars) for being unprofessional and leaving them during hot season. I was shocked. Such a shitty thing to do, especially when I gave the manager a whole extra month to find my replacement, when I had absolutely no obligation to do so. Why even work hard to see the reward of my work get taken away from me… They disgust me.
I didn't show up for work today. I will not show up for work tomorrow. They'll never see me again. Bunch of bastards.
