Sports analogies at work

So a few weeks ago I used a sports analogy while discussing a process improvement. My manger stopped the meeting and called me out for it. Said most people wouldn’t understand it. Most. I said ok. More than half my team reached out to me privately and said they understood the analogy and had no issue with it. I quietly put it behind me. Fast forward to this week and an HR rep was giving a presentation and used a sports analogy. Not a word from my manager calling out the HR person’s analogy. My frustration is this: it should be all or nothing. If there is problem with these phrases then no one should use them. Am I wrong? For context I am M and the HR rep is F. And the analogies were baseball related.
