Startling conversation I had with my parents

I was just talking to my parents about an upcoming work-trip, for which my attendance wouldn't be really necessary, but the powers that be still want me to come with. I told them that and their reaction was something like “Well still, you can sacrifice some of your free-time for the company; you owe them that much” (I am of course getting paid for the trip, but it does take me away for 3 whole days). Specifically the 'I owe them that' part sort of surprised me, but no big deal, I get what they mean, so I somewhat jokingly said “Well, I work to live, I don't live to work” – to which my Dad; a man who was hospitalized for burnout; who got fucked over on several occasions by his employer, and was nearly cheated out of (part of) his pension, completely sincerely asked “What's the difference?”, which…

I told him that one can live without working, but one can't work without living (or at least it wouldn't be a good life), but he still didn't really understand. I honestly felt so sorry at that point.

Has anyone else had conversations like that?
