I work in 911 Fire/EMS. My employer is a growing city/township in a very affluent community. We get paid well, aren’t too busy, and have some incredible employees.
We consistently exceed expectations because we love the job itself and have pride. We beat response time standards, have increased our EMS billing revenue, and consistently get compliments from those we help.
However, our current uniform standard makes us wear a navy button up badge shirt over a red cotton tshirt. If you aren’t familiar, most places wear navy tshirts. We also wear thick navy uniform pants and boots. The area we work had brutal summer heat with high humidity. Even during heat advisories, we are required to wear this uniform. This has been a major complaint for years and years, we have done surveys, tried to compromise on other “professional” looking uniforms, etc to no avail. Recently we have even been told that if we want to wear tshirts, to go work somewhere else.
I have been given many opportunities at this employer, including promotional opportunities. I have many other complaints, but I can’t get away from this inform standard. We are the only department in the area with this type of standard.
I am seriously considering leaving this employer, leaving behind seniority and all the other perks, over this. After all, we were told to go work somewhere else if we want a different uniform.
