My current workplace just extended their hours, which in turn has increased all of our work hours by more than 8 hours per week. However, we are paid salary and have seen no change to our pay… which in and of itself is equivalent to a pay cut. We are essentially working another full shift for free.
There have been some grumbles but no one has really spoken up about this. I couldn't believe that what they were doing was entirely legal, as not only are we now working in excess of our contracted hours (37.5 / week), we are also in excess of our provincially Legislated full time hours (44 / week). We do not recieve overtime pay nor any additional compensation for the extra hours worked.
So I did some research and low and behold, it would appear that they are breaking labour laws and withholding overtime pay. I informed my colleagues as well as management, hoping that it would make them just as angry as it's made me – This company goes on an on about values and work life balance and fair and equitable treatment, etc….
No one cares. Not one person. They shrugged their shoulders and said oh well it is what it is, my last job made us work through our lunches or some other example of poor treatment. I was even told to be careful because now I've made an enemy of upper management.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here! I know for a fact that some of these people can't even afford groceries but they just bend over and take whatever this multi-million dollar company is fucking them with. This is exactly why we aren't seeing change! I want to shake them and tell them that they're worth more! I'm so damn tired of living through this brainwashed, conspiracy theory obsessed, late-stage capitalist hell scape.
I just needed a rant and maybe some words of solidarity to know that I'm not the crazy one here haha. Thanks.
