Just for backround, I'm a prep cook at a small local restaurant. I'm in the side room, eating my lunch and scrolling on my phone when my boss comes in.
“Hey what's up? Who you texting” as he stands there in front of the door with a serious face
I chuckle to myself, “That's none of your business”
“What are you talking about, I'm your boss. You have to tell me.” He remains serious
“No, I don't.”
“What do you mean no, I'm your boss you have to tell me”
“No I don't, it's making me really uncomfortable that you're asking things like that.”
He looks offended, “Hey man, it's just a joke. Don't get upset cause you don't get it.”
“Well if that was a joke, I didn't think it was funny.”
He just looks at me funny and walks away before coming back a few minutes later and says:
“Hey just for the record, I really don't give a fuck what you do. Like, I don't care. Seriously.”
“Okay, cool”
“Like I'm just joking around, you gotta relax man. Did something happen? Girlfriend yell at you or something?”
“No? You shouldn't be saying things like that to people you barely know. I've worked here for a week, I don't even know your last name. It's even weirder because theres a power dynamic here.”
“Well my last name is _____, but yeah dude just relax, I really don't give a fuck what you do man. Eat your lunch and we'll need you in a couple minutes.”
I'm thankfully in a position where I don't need a job currently but honestly this interaction really bothered me and I can apply to several other jobs with possibly better pay. I'm thinking of just doing that, I do not want to work with this guy for any length of time.
