In Canada.
My husband was hired about a month ago for a large multi million dollar company (ex. Profits in 2021 were $151 million). He is salary – 65k a year. Not a liveable wage here in Ontario and a family of 4.
This is his first job making salary. My father, boomer extraordinaire and major corporation bootlicker, told him that because he is salary, he is on call 24/7 until the “work is done”. I laughed at him and was like “nah, you're being dramatic.”
Guys…. they actually do expect him to be on call 24/7. They gave him a company laptop and phone and demand that both be on the entire day, whether at home or at the office. He works 6am-2pm in the office, gets RIPPED APART by HR if he's even 1 min late, and then RIPPED APART again if he tries to actually leave at 2pm which is his STATED END TIME… he's been recently shutting off his company phone at home because it's been extremely overwhelming. He can't enjoy time with our two kids or new puppy without being called away every 10 minutes.
He fell asleep yesterday at his desk because he was working the night before up until midnight and had to wake up at 4:30 am to get to work on time to open the office. They berated him, of course. But how could they honestly expect him to be well rested after forcing him to work until midnight the night before??? Who can honestly function properly after 4.5 hrs of sleep??? He is given so much work that he is working evenings and weekends after BEING AT THE OFFICE ALL DAY.
The final straw was when I saw that his job had posted for another manager – the same position he has. They need 4 of them on deck at all times. The posted salary is between $66-71k a year. My husband makes $1000 less. He brought this ad to HRs attention and they said they were “disappointed” in him being so “petty”, and that the new salary band for his job is for “trained employees only”. Now he's only been there a month but he's well into/almost done his training. And wouldn't $66,000 be the salary for new untrained hires? Because that's the absolute lowest salary posted?
Please tell me I'm not fucking crazy.
