this petty detail felt like a new low, even for our corporate overlords

I've heard of the bait and switch where employers say on job posts that the starting wage is one thing, then tell you at the interview that it's way less than that. I've worked at companies where they promise you certain benefits and it turns out the benefits are empty, ex. “we have an employee health plan!” aka “there technically is health insurance you can sign up for, but if you do, you'll see less than minimum wage on the check and won't be able to afford food or rent, because the company doesn't actually contribute.” Well, my partner and I are in the middle of renovating our house, which we were able to afford because it's pretty much falling apart. We are both in the construction industry, so it should be easy to fix it up by ourselves. He's working 60 hours a week so I can dedicate myself…

I've heard of the bait and switch where employers say on job posts that the starting wage is one thing, then tell you at the interview that it's way less than that.

I've worked at companies where they promise you certain benefits and it turns out the benefits are empty, ex. “we have an employee health plan!” aka “there technically is health insurance you can sign up for, but if you do, you'll see less than minimum wage on the check and won't be able to afford food or rent, because the company doesn't actually contribute.”

Well, my partner and I are in the middle of renovating our house, which we were able to afford because it's pretty much falling apart. We are both in the construction industry, so it should be easy to fix it up by ourselves. He's working 60 hours a week so I can dedicate myself to our fixer-upper. Then it occurred to me that if I get a part-time job at a home improvement store, maybe I can slash the cost of all the materials by 10 or 20% with an employee discount, right?

So I go look at jobs on the internet and sure enough, a certain orange employer says there's an employee discount. All the locations are hiring, so the next time I'm in there, I ask an employee, hey, do you mind me asking how much the employee discount is here?

She looks confused, tell me there's no employee discount. Waves over a manager to double-check. Manager tells me yeah, there's no such thing as an employee discount here or at any location.

Well the orange website says there is, and it's the only reason working here would be worth it, because cashiering for minimum wage ain't it. They just want you to waste your time filling out the application and peeing in a cup before you find out.

TL;DR online job posts aren't just lying about wages, even the existence of an employee discount is potentially a blatant lie.
