Those of you who leave work, how do you pay for life?

I am a few years away from retirement and am exhausted. I would like to leave my job. But I am curious – how do you pay for life? Rent/mortgage, insurance, medical and dental care, etc? Does everyone have a big savings account and free housing with someone else? Do you switch to gig work, and if so, was that any better? it seems to me that people in the business world mostly suck overall, so how would being a contractor/gig worker/consultant really be any different? I have considered buying a food truck and parking it at kid's athletic events – seems like that would make a lot of money. Please share your options and thoughts on leaving work and not going back.
