Throwback Switcharoo

I’ve been reading a lot of posts about people showing up for interviews and then being told it’s like an unpaid training day, or it’s not for a job they actually applied to. Happened to me but didn’t realize how common, and how long! It’s been going on for. This was when I was a teenager so like 20 ish years ago. I had applied to be work the front desk at a local small town hotel down the road from my parents house. After I applied got a call back within a few days and lined up an interview for a couple days later. They needed weekend daytime/evening shifts covered. I was pretty stoked cause at that point I was making minimum wage at a fast food joint. That place alone deserves its own post haha. Anyways this job was I think $3 over min which would be sweet.…

I get to the interview in nice dress clothes and they immediately say it’s for a cleaning job and set me up with one of their cleaners to get to know the ropes, I explained I applied for the front desk position and they said you need to clean rooms before you can get that position. I was 16 and not able to stand up for myself at that point in my life and spent the next few hours following around this lady while she showed me how to clean rooms, making hilarious statements like all money, booze, and party favors are finders keepers. I’m very clearly a teen haha like what.

I was supposed to do like 6 hours there, 3 hours in and I was done, told them I was leaving and asked to be paid for the work. They said they’d need to write a check before they can pay me, took them a month of me calling everyday before they said it was ready. Picked it up and it was minimum wage, minus a training fee haha.

Companies have been doing this crap forever!!
