My first day at a brewery started yesterday. Iv worked in the field for a long time and they hired me straight on as a lead bartender. I have been a GM at a few bars/restaurants but I really did not want to do that much stressful work again.
I worked my first shift really busy but relatively easy as it’s beer and bbq. The staff is great and everything went well all the way up until close where my trainer was showing me how we take tips. He pointed out to me that the card company takes a percentage out of our tips for processing (processing fee). I was shocked that this was seen as accepted.
I asked why we had to pay for the restaurant’s credit card bills and he said he doesn’t know and can’t really do anything about it. I get it he’s just like me we are just there to do our jobs nothing more.
But I’m generally kind of pissed bc I don’t think that’s right? I’m tired of having to pay into jobs to make money. Kinda backwards. Even if it’s only $5-$10 a shift in fees- over a year me working 20 hours a week I am probably out between $800-$1200 a year. That’s another months rent right there.
I really want to say something to the owner but this is just a part time job that I need right now and I don’t want to start off being a pain in the ass.
