Told to pay back sign on bonus

Hi! This is my first time posting here so i’m sorry if formatting is weird or anything. I used to work at a State Supported Living Center for about 2 months. We received a sign on bonus of $2500 ($1700 after taxes), that was contingent on me staying there for 6 months. I trained for a month and then I was on the floor. My first week I was left on the floor alone with about 8 individuals, and I was left on a 1to1 several hours a day even though you weren’t supposed to be on a 1to1 until you were on the floor for 30 days. I also reported a case of abuse and neglect and while my report was taken “seriously”, they told me I was just new and hadn’t seen how staff interact sometimes. I knew what I had seen was very much abuse but it was out of cameras so it wasn’t properly investigated. I was also demeaned if I didn’t want to work overtime, even though I put in a hardship because I’m also a full time student. I usually was still forced to work 3+ hours overtime a day regardless. When I left I was texted for an “exit interview” where they asked why I left, and I gave them all those reasons. They just said “you weren’t supposed to be left on the floor alone” and I said that I was, with no reply after that. Now they want me to pay the $1700 back, even though I told my upper management about all these problems while I was there with no response. Is there even anything I can do, or am I stuck with it?
