Concrete finisher here. My gf and I took my first paid vacation a couple weeks ago. Just a camping trip. Last week Wednesday was my first day back and on Friday I had to quit. It is important to remember to get fired if you don’t have other work. I have been preparing to leave this company though. The argument started 9 hours into the work day about me simply unloading some 2x4s out of my trailer at the end of the day. See at that very moment I was about to the leave the job site to drive an hour to the shop and unload those 2x4s and end my day but the owner wanted me to stay on site to help cover the concrete if it started raining. I had no problem with this although I told him I wouldn’t be unloading the trailer at the end of the day as I would easily be 11-12 hours deep at the point and I have a 45 minute drive home and plans to go spend the weekend with my gfs family starting that night we were driving to see them. And I cannot express enough how much it wasn’t necessary to unload that shit. Easily could have come in Monday morning a littler early but he wouldn’t hear it. This turned into an argument where I was told I have a shitty attitude and that everyone else works harder than me which is weird cause I start 6 months ago for this guy and he promoted me to foreman in that time. Honestly after 6 months of working for this guy there’d been so many red flags I just couldn’t bite my tongue. I made a point to yell at him about all the issues I have with his style of management instead of trying to talk it out and let him talk over me. He famously pretends to listen and then says his point so I wanted to make sure he heard everything. His entire finishing crew got to hear him bitch about me taking my vacation too so now everyone knows that he doesn’t want you to take it. He’s only nice so he can throw it in your face later. So I have one side job to do tomorrow and Friday that will pay me better than a normal full weeks work for that douche and then another full time job right in town to start on Tuesday for the same hourly rate and I don’t have to spend a hundred dollars on gas a week just to get to work.
