My dad often tells a story of his time in Hong Kong in the 70's. His brother was working out there and he went to visit. They were on a high floor in a skyscraper when a local window cleaner entered the room, opened a window and climbed outside onto a 1ft wide ledge and started washing windows. Dad was shocked and asked his brother what happened if the cleaner fell.
His brother simply said they get another window cleaner.
Terry Pratchett put it well when he wrote “And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.’
‘It’s a lot more complicated than that -’
‘No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.”
A lot of the posts I see here are people being treated as things.
