Unrealistic expectations from employers

I work as a teacher at an elementary school in the states. We were just encouraged to eat lunch with our students and essentially work during our lunch break because we shouldn't value our “precious lunch” so much. Plus, they give us so much work to do that we can't get it all done in an 8 hour day, so a lot of teachers stay past the time they get paid. Even when they finally go home, they encourage each other to still answer work related messages. It's as if we're not expected to have a productive life outside of work because, when we give so much of ourselves to our job, we don't have much left for friends, family, and relaxation.
