One of the guys in the article mentioned leaving the VA in 2018 and didn't get the first debt letter till 2022! And good luck if you've moved after you left, VA will send debt letters to your old address (even if you updated your address on your VA health records). After a few more letters/invoices with no response (cause they sent it to wrong address) they'll move the debt to Treasury and tack on an extra $5k to the debt balance for 'administrative fees'. Getting the agency to admit their own mistakes is a nigh impossible battle and a lot of folks who pay it all back had, will have to pay for the agency's mistake.
