WARNING to Anyone Being Forced Back to the Office and Planning to Resign Immediately

We've all seen the articles, videos, posts, etc. about companies pulling the plug on WFH, forcing their workers back into the office, and not caring how it affects their employees. Now that headlines are shifting away from “hottest job market since the 2008 housing crash” and more towards “impending recession looming”, please please PLEASE know that these companies are not stupid when they are pulling their benefits right now. They're fully aware that many of their workers are pissed. They know full well that their workers may quit. In many of the cases, pulling WFH and getting your same-day resignations may very well be the point right now– weed out the job hoppers, the workers with better opportunities, the workers with a spine who won't be pushed around.

After all, if you are the US and you quit of your own volition, regardless of the reason, these companies have no requirement to pay you unemployment. They do, however, retain the employees that are less likely to jump ship a few months from now if the company has to go through layoffs, and any people who leave now don't have to be paid severance.

This is not me saying to stay in a job that sucks. What I am saying, is that unless you're in a full deal breaker scenario, that if you can stick it out for a few more weeks or months, please consider doing so until you have the next offer in hand. If you get laid off anyways, at least you will get severance if they owe it to you. But if you quit on impulse, you lose your severance claim and you can't get unemployment.

100% YES fuck these companies, and yes, you should look for the next offer. You are responsible for taking care of yourself — that is the practically the motto of this server. You are a free individual and you owe it to yourself to act like one, and not a doormat. However, part of taking care of yourself is not impulse quitting, leaving yourself out to dry if you don't get hired right away, then screwed over even harder if we do enter a recession + all your coworkers get laid off with severance/ unemployment, while you get absolutely nothing except a growing gap on your resume that will make it harder with each passing day to land that next opportunity.

TL;DR: If your company pulls WFH, please take a moment and consider your options. Your company may be trying to trick you out of your severance or unemployment if they're planning for lay offs in the coming months.
