Wasting everyone’s time

Saw a thing on Twitter, and it reminded me of a time when I wasted an entire day applying to the cable company Spectrum for a CSR position. TL;DR Job posting didn't include a link to the required online application or say that a Saturday or Sunday shift would be required, which I couldn't do because of the bus schedule. I tell them I wasted an entire day because of their poor job listing. I don't drive, so my job search is hampered by the bus lines. Thankfully, I live in an area with a robust public transit.

I saw a posting on Craigslist for Spectrum intending to hire a bunch of CSRs. It said to bring copies of your résumé between 9 AM & 9 PM on that day and they would be holding interviews. I checked the bus route on Google, saw it was feasible to get their by 7 AM and leave by 9 PM and still get home, M-F. There are buses running all day, back and forth, so I can have some flexibility for varying schedules. Weekend schedule was crap though.

I arrived and signed in, then took a seat. There's a wide variety of people, which makes sense for such a role. Catered food is brought in for employees, that's a nice perk. I get bored waiting, as I don't want to drain my phone and be unable to navigate the buses home. I realize I should have brought a book.

They call my name a couple of hours later and I'm told they couldn't find my application in the system. What application? The application I was supposed to fill out before coming. i tell them the ad said to bring my résumé and there would be interviews and that there was no mention of an application. I'm told they have some laptops available for use, but I'll need to wait for one to free up. Why couldn't there have been a sign saying this? My name is added to that list and I sit back down. I'm finally called for the laptop after an hour. I have to type in my résumé as part of it. Fuck. I try to log into my email account so I can copy/paste over my résumé that's in an email, but I need to enter a security code they texted me. I have shitty signal, so I wander around until I get two bars and it arrives. OK. Enter it all. Then I have to take several short tests using a training program that emulates a phone call. I get everything answered well within the time limits. I finally submit my application. I let them know, they say great, fill out this paper questionnaire and wait.

I finally am called for the actual interview. It's close to 8 PM and the interviewer looks over my résumé and my scores on the application. She's very impressed. Then she looks at my paper questionnaire and tells me the job requires a Saturday or Sunday shift, but I only listed M-F availability. I don't have the bus schedule in front of me, but I remembered seeing that the bus options on the weekend were sparse and not spaced to allow for a workday. I tell her that I won't be able to make that work, but I do have extended weekday availability based on the hours the buses run. She says that's too bad, they can't consider me as a result. I say it's too bad their job posting didn't list the days required or even a link to the application, as i could have avoided wasting my entire day.

All that for a job that only paid 15 USD/hour in an area where housing starts at 1000 for something too small.
