We need to talk about population

In the 1950s the world population was around 2.5 billion people. It is now around 8 billion people and it is expected to go to around 10 billion before balancing out (That is the theory anyway). So that is a 25% increase from were we are now. The reality is that I think people forget how many a billion is.. The next biggest species to us are the livestock species to feed us.

(The conditions we create for mass farming are insanely brutal to witness)

We have islands of garbage in the ocean.

We have changed so many unique and wonderful landscapes into standardized crop production to keep us alive at these levels.

In major population centers and industrial centers the air itself is poison and the smoggy haze is literally viewable.

We have gotten rid of so much amazing biodiversity. It is gone.

We having growing political extremism due to people feeling alienated and or divorced from the system or a hope of quality of life.

We have large amounts of depression and anxiety in the system. Not linked to genetic disposition but from an environment we have created and then medicate ourselves with strong drugs for.

This is a sick world.

A lot of it has to do with greed there is no doubt but numbers matter.

A huge amount of the population lives in extreme poverty and an even larger amount live in regular metrics of poverty.

We need to help countries to get organized so they can create social nets for their people and especially the vulnerable. We need to liberate woman with education, opportunities, and safe and accessible birth control.

We need to move away from folk lore understandings that you “live on through your children”.

You don't.

When you die you die. There is an urgency here. This is reality. You have this one life. You need to make it count for yourself and for others. When it is done it is done.

We talk a lot about affordability of life and quality of life.

We talk about unionization and worker rights.

We have to address some of these abstract factors because it stacks the deck against everything and we are being almost ignorantly blind to how it impacts everyone and everything.

When conditions are bad and people are desperate there will always be exploitation and it will be easy.
