We’re always hiring!

There’s a pizza place in my town owned by a Chef/Proprietor who has had success in a neighboring market. It’s right around the corner from my house so I am constantly passing it. The shop is located in an “up-and-coming” area but all of the restaurants around it are struggling. Last year, they were open M-Sun 11am-10pm. Whenever I would pass by, there would be a few people at the bar and 2-3 tables were sat. Then it went down to M-Thurs 4pm-10pm, Fri-Sun 11-10. I started noticing fewer and fewer customers. Then it went down to M-Sun 4pm-10pm. Then it went down to just Thurs-Sun 4pm-10pm. Last year, they were open M-Sun 11am-10pm. Whenever I would pass by, there would be a few people at the bar and 2-3 tables were sat.

Then it went down to M-Sun 4pm-10pm.

Then it went down to just Thurs-Sun 4pm-10pm.

So, in all of the owner’s infinite wisdom, he’s opening up another location in a more remote — but developing! — “up-and-coming” area in town.

The handful of businesses that are currently there are struggling because they are too removed from the tourist district to draw in that foot traffic and revenue.

They put out a listing for an Assistant Kitchen Manager for $20-$23/hr, full-time. I applied because I was interested in learning from the Chef (he really is quite accomplished) and, hell, I love making pizzas.

I have the experience, I have the interest, and I have the temperament for Kitchen work.

A recruiter called me a few days later. The call went well and they told me that the owner would be in contact with me in a few days.

Never heard back. That was three weeks ago.

Eventually, the AKM position was removed from Indeed as well as from their site’s available positions in their Employment Opportunities section. So they filled the position. Good for them.

Yesterday, I get a text from the recruiter (how professional!) asking if I was still interested in the position.

I checked Indeed and the AKM position has been posted again.

The kicker is that they had a new listing for a Kitchen Manager! So… the entire BOH leadership left y’all in the past week? No red flags there.

I texted her back and I asked her which position would they think I’m the best fit for, as I see the KM position available as well.

They asked if the owner could call me at 9am on Tuesday to discuss the details.

I said sure.

I doubt he’ll call.

I already have a different job making more than they’re willing to pay but I’m interested to see how this guy explains the gaps in his store’s BOH coverage.

What a dumpster fire.
