What is your worst interview experience?

I have a few but this is the one that comes to mind first, TLDR at bottom. Many years ago I attended a part-time teacher interview at the school, Sacred Heart in south east London, UK. It was a super hot summer, and I had to be at the interview before the school opened. I hardly slept that night, as I was nervous. I had to drag a very heavy A0 portfolio with me (the biggest portfolio you can get) on the London Underground system for more than an hour. The portfolio was a requirement to bring. I get there. I was maybe one of 5 candidates for this role. We all met and went on a tour of the school. Then we were all divided separately to teach a lesson (an hour and a half) while being monitored. Then after lunch, we were all interviewed separately by the head of the department. Around an hour long. Then we were all told to answer a questionnaire, essay style by hand and we were timed for 30 mins. Again all in separate rooms.

Finally got called into the final interview, which was a panel interview. I was second to last to go in.

During that interview, they asked me lots of evidence based questions, which my answers were inside my portfolio. But the panel refused to let me open my portfolio due to, “running out of time.” I tried multiple times to open my portfolio but I was shut down constantly.

After an hour of this interview. Was told to wait in the staff room, with the others. After maybe another hour, the head teacher came in and offered the job to one person, because they were doing a masters. The rest of us got told to go home.

I travel over an hour in the summer heat, again on the London Underground, with this super heavy and super awkward portfolio during rush hour. I get home, dropped all my things and dropped on my knees crying.

I was so tired, so angry and so frustrated by that experience, I decided fuck teaching and left the field completely. I spent a whole day, unpaid, giving them my time – and they couldn’t even be bothered to look at my portfolio. I decided if this is how schools treat potential colleagues, I don’t want nothing to do with them. (AND FOR A PART TIME JOB!)

TLDR: had to carry a very large and heavy portfolio on public transportation, which was a requirement for the interview and they didn’t even bother looking at it.
