I just recently about two months ago now became a body technician apprentice for a company. I did an interview stipulated that I wanted to get out of retail and actually pursue a career that had more feasibility in future. And after the interview a couple days later I was happily told I have the job. In the interview they did not require experience and I told them before that I had only successfully changed my tires once.
So I come in trying to learn everything I can about how to take off any bolted on piece of a car. The reason i'm hesitant to continue this job and relationship with them is my mentor i'm apprenticing under went on an insulting tiraid.
Some more context, I'm trying to take off the rocker panel or sideskurt of a Dodge Challenger. So that I can get the dented front right fender of the car off. But I can't take the rocker panel off unless I open the front door but because of how dented the fender is if I try and open the front door I will dent the door and create more damage. So I stop what I am doing and I ask my mentor what to do and he told me to go work on something else on that car. So following that advice I try to Jack the car up to try and take the right front wheel off because that was the next thing we had to take off. According to the paperwork.
He sees this. He comes over throws or rolls the carjack into a wall and throws his tool downs on the ground and says ” Why the f*** do you always do the opposite of what I say to do? Why do you never listen to me why are you such a f****** idiot” I say ” hey I'm sorry I thought you wanted me to work on another part of this car. I'm trying to do what I thought you said” Come in a handful more minutes of the speck of forth where he's cussing and yelling About my ineptitude and being unable to listen to him.
So after that I tell the facility manager Hey this is what happened. I'm going home I don't want to work with him today. The following day I show up late because we're going to have a meeting between the facility manager and my mentor, And the facility manager says “my mentors is sorry, and he recognizes he didn't handle it well at all”
I just don't believe that. The facility manager said that. To me on my mentors behalf, My mentor never apologized he never looked remorseful when we were discussing why this happened he said “you didn't listen to me right away and I demand that of I'm gonna teach you”
I felt and still do disrespected. I don't know if I even really wanna continue working there? But I need the money to pay my bills. If I can just manage to stay long enough to graduate the apprenticeship that I could be a fully fledged to journeyman technician. But with how my mentor acts and reacts to every situation that slows hidden down or hinders his progress it's just idk.
So I'm asking for some advice should I continue and just bite my tongue for this technician degree? Or should I just do the bare minimum and trying to find a new job? Heck i'm open to any options as long as they're good and realistic.
