When is resigning/quitting a good decision?

It seems like the advice on here is always aim to get fired and never resign so that you get unemployment. Are there any downsides to being fired or scenarios where it would be advantageous for the worker the quit? Is it illegal to intentionally do a shitty job at work to provoke being fired to in turn collect unemployment?
