Where I live (non-US), we have a labor law that states that in December, the employer has to pay a 13th salary to the employee. No, our economy hasn’t collapsed. We also get a “14th salary” in july.

Labor Law in Guatemala was established in the 50s. Salaried employees get a 13th salary, equal to the ones received every other month, and employers often pay it no later than December 15th. Everyone budgets it in advance, so we use it for down payments on cars, travel, an extra mortgage payment, christmas gifts, college tuition, clothes, to pay off debt or to save.
