Why are some companies obsessed with returning to office/making people who type on a computer for a living work in an office?

I just truly don’t understand this whole ‘back to office’ initiative. I’ll use my company as an example, a digital marketing agency. Of course due to COVID the entire company went fully remote. We have a pretty big office in a nice area of a big city for more context. Anyway, our business/growth actually was better after everyone went remote and the majority of people wanted to stay remote, if not at least have a hybrid situation. After COVID they forced everyone back into the office, which didn’t really fly with some people who just straight up didn’t come back lol. And I know many people who’s company did the same. I just don’t understand, if people prove that they can work from home, be productive and are happier AND have 0 reason to be in office because we all work from computers and even when we have meetings in…

I just don’t understand, if people prove that they can work from home, be productive and are happier AND have 0 reason to be in office because we all work from computers and even when we have meetings in office it’s usually over gmeet or teams – what’s the weird obsession with being in office? Wouldn’t they want to cut overhead on a huge office space that only like 12 people use? Sell all of the furniture and get rid of it that must be a huge cost.

The reasoning is ‘culture’ and ‘collaboration’ but I know for a fact there’s none of that in office.

Like what gives? Do they just not trust people or do they just like to control?
