“You can be whatever you want when you grow up”
“Listen to your inner voice, and become the beast that you are”
“Heed the call of the universe, and become what you were meant to be”
“God is dead, and we killed him, therefore it's up to ourselves to define our own meanings.”
…
Yet when you ask them what SPECIFICALLY do they mean, they would always give you examples like “Tom loved adventure as a kid so he grew up and became a firefighter”, or “Jessie was bored as hell as an accountant until he listened to his inner voice and became a musician and now he's found meaning”
JFC. Why is my identity, my role, my meaning, (if there is such a thing) always boil down to `finding the right job`? Why does it have to have anything to do with working? Can't I find my meaning by playing minecraft, eating pizza, or just existing?
You can NOT be whatever you want. There's no way I can fly without the help of machines or explore the galaxy of Andromeda, although that's what I really want to do. Even within the world we are living in, there is no way most of us could be a billionaire or pro-athlete or movie star. The fact that society want us to believe we can be whatever we want to be is ridiculous, and that such “freedom” is achieved by finding THE job that's meant for you is beyond absurd.
