Why does everyone care about margin on projects

I've started an engineering internship at an oil and gas company (it's the the field I want to be in but I was desperate for an internship) and everyone is always so concerned about the margin on our projects. I don't understand why anyone cares, it's not like any of us engineers see any extra money if the project has a higher margin. Even the outgoing intern who's been there for over a year is always talking about margin, I've asked him and we don't get a year end bonus so there's literally no reason for us to care. Is this just some sort of corporate brain washing that has taken effect? Because I give zero shits if a project will loose or gain the company any amount.
