Why is asking for time off so looked down on?

Just started a seasonal job in March that goes until November. All I did was ask for TWO unpaid days off which is over 3 months from now for a family event. And my employer told me it may not be approved because of staffing conflict. So are you telling me that nobody can take a day off for the next 8 months? What if they're sick? It just doesn't make sense to me. Meanwhile the boss who told me this just went on a 2 week vacation to Hawaii one day after telling me this. This has been the case at every job I've worked too. I ask for my full time paid days off, or for a few days of unpaid leave and it is the end of the world for every boss I've had. It's like even if they are obligated to give you time off, whatever…

This has been the case at every job I've worked too. I ask for my full time paid days off, or for a few days of unpaid leave and it is the end of the world for every boss I've had. It's like even if they are obligated to give you time off, whatever time you choose is inconvenient to them.

Is this a North American cultural thing? I get my current position is seasonal, but I do have a life with my family outside of this and would like one long weekend throughout the summer lol. Just seems I either have bad luck with employers, or they all expect you to never want any days off.
