Why do people languish in the same shitty job for so long? How come people aren’t constantly applying for new jobs while they have an income in search of something that pays better?
Zip recruiter is a very efficient website. I recently found myself without a job as I quit my job of 4 years making 76k for one that seemed much better making 89k plus a yearly discretionary bonus of 10-15k plus all my gas paid for and other perks. The job I had was stable, but I had outgrown it and my happiness was diminished there.
Within 2 1/2 months I was let go from that job for unknown reasons I suspect they hired up for a few projects that fell through but there were some other signs of instability in other ways such as the owner and his wife bringing their marital baggage and fighting into the office and the lead guy gossiping a lot. Anyways,
Now jobless I started pinging the entire industry I work in (construction management) with my resume regardless of job title (superintendent, project manager, assistant project manager, estimator, project executive, etc) in the next 3-4 days I received an avalanche of phone calls. A lot of actual companies, and some recruiters.
Just last week I accepted a position making 105k with a 20-30k discretionary bonus and I get a company truck plus better healthcare and the owners are super friendly (unlike the last place who offered decent money but we’re not very engaging).
The point is, always be practicing the skill of interviewing and prospecting. Stop languishing in these shitty jobs. There is no rule that you have to have experience pertaining to a specific title in order to get hired for it. Refine your resume to paint a broad picture of both your experience and your personal interests. Purposely apply to a shitty job you would never take and ask to be paid 5 times what they are offering just to gauge their response.
It’s all a numbers game, the more employers that are ringing your phone the higher your prospect is of getting hired at one that isn’t a d bag. Interviewing for jobs is a skill just like any skill you do in your current job.
