Back in August my wifes old boss asked her to come back to work for him and promised a $5k bonus at the end of the year if she did. The only reason we decided it was a good idea to go back was we have been saving for a house and the money would put us over the top for what we need for a downpayment. This would easily save us a year of saving. Now it's the end of the year and he is trying to back out of paying.
A little backstory on the job. My wife is a LPN and worked in nursing homes for years. This guy is a doctor and needed someone with a medical background to run his office. The pay and hours were way better than working at a nursing home. So for 8 years she ran his office. He is not a very easy person to work for so she eventually left. After two years he couldn't find or keep anyone that could do the job. So when she went back it took months to clean things up and get things running again. Now this DB won't pay. Going to give him a few more days to change his mind, but I am not hopeful. Guy has no idea how much more than $5k her leaving is going to cost him. And it's not like he doesn't have it. My wife deals with billing, so she knows the money is there. Plus the dude is in his 70's, never married, no kids, and lives in a house that is easily worth $2 million +. Hell he rents a Mercedes SUV every winter that cost more than that.
Sorry for the rant, just pissed off right now. Even someone with a dual income of over $120k can't get a house anymore.
