“Work ethic” feels like propaganda to instil the idea that working yourself to a grave is somehow virtuous

The use of the term seems to be on the rise. And correct me if I'm wrong, but it does seem like a relatively new one. I've also only ever heard it in American discourse. Is this a reach or a real trend you've been noticing as well?
