2.5 years in a new line of work, I train new employees and Temps, but…

As the title says, I have been in a new line of work, (industrial maintenance), for about 2.5yrs. I have been training new employees and Temps, but I have heard from those Temps as far as their pay goes, they are making more money than I. Is this a common practice? I also applied for a mechanical engineering position at my company and was not promoted. BUT they needed someone who is good with the equipment to train the new engineer, and guess who that was? I know where all the bodies are buried as far as safety goes and our Safety Coordinator/ Accountant (go figure) is completely incompetent and is a “yes man” for management. Any advice? My background was 20+ years in Automotive as an ASE Master Certified Technician until a work injury took me out of my career.

Like I said, I want to quit but every day is another train wreck that I can't stop watching.
