Relationship versus transactional

Dr. Linda Duxbury of Carleton University once gave a public lecture (wish there were transcripts). Words to the effect: They want the worker to think in relationship term, going the extra mile. They tell you this is a family, service to the public and to the customers, etc. Then they treat you transactionally–you are only profit for them–and wonder why morale is low.

Family Time

Today I called off to spend time with my girls. Yesterday my oldest turned three and wanted to sleep in this pop-up tent we got her and she asked me to sleep in the tent with her. I woke up around 5AM and spent some time just admiring and reflecting on how much she has grown and changed and thought to myself that I’d hate for her to wake up and I’m not there next to her. So I called off. Part of me feels guilty for doing it, part of me doesn’t. Always just tell myself that if they fire me, I’ll find something else. Moral of the story: don’t sacrifice priceless time with your family for an hourly wage.

Capitalism is anti-disabilities

Long story short i have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and I struggle with a lot if chronic pain, and I feel like I won't ever get ahead. At 31, I have very limited work experience, and although I'm considered to be smart, college is tough for me as well. I feel like I can't just hustle/push through, and Im way behind my peers.

A friend who is a server had $923 gratuity taken because it was “too much”

My waitress friend worked super bowl Sunday and made $923 in auto-gratuity tips from working the event. The $923 was supposed to be split between servers and bartenders. The whole amount was taken by her manager because it was “too much money”. She quit and found a new job but how can there ever be too much money for a server?? They pay them below minimum wage and then deny tips. I told her to report them to the department of labor for wage theft. It still makes me so angry though. 3 guys bar and pizza in Edwardsville Pennsylvania.

For context, I’m a teacher and we’re going on a field trip to a career center with simulations to show kids what the real world is like. So now I have to chaperone and do someone else’s job.

It would be cool if corporations offered actual careers instead of indentured servitude designed to keep you as unskilled and unmarketable as possible

Nuclear war with Russia would be one of the best things that could possibly happen to our generation.

Once the nukes start flying think about how property values are going to plummet. We can all get that dream acre of land and the only issue with it is it's going to be uranium enriched. Too bad we'll all still have to go to work because we're “essential workers” 🤡
