House spousing with pride

TL;DR: got any witty comebacks for people who look down on house spouses/“stay at home” parents? Background: “elder” millennial, living in the US. Accelerated student (graduated with BA&BS at 20), fueled on anxiety and hyperfocus. Been married decade+, have worked decade+ too, frequently with multiple jobs and/or long hours. The past couple of years we’ve been discussing wanting to foster/adopt as we’ve slooowly been stabilizing finances and working to improve mental health. We still have a ways to go, but our goal is for me to transition to house spouse in 3-4 years. The short window of COVID stay-at-home-for-real gave me a taste for the satisfaction real focus on “managing the home” when I can do it /well/ and not exhausted mentally gives me. Not just cleaning/tidying but tackling the maintenance, getting a tiny garden going, finding ways to make our lives more self sufficient and doing what we can…

About at the end of my rope

I was making ok money up till my side job got messed up by the pandemic. I've been jobhunting for something that doesn't pay peanuts since November. I went to a debt consolidation/renegotiation non-profit that basically helps you manage your debts at cost and turns it all into a single monthly bill. They went over the numbers with me and my monthly expenses amount to $3k and my income is $2k. I only get to see my daughter on my weekend, but I can't sustain things at this rate. I wish I had a better plan than to keep trying for new jobs with increasing desperation.

If all of us didn’t pay or file taxes

Just curious what would happen if every person In the U.S didn’t file with the IRS and pay taxes? I’m curious what would be the consequences if as a collective majority didn’t follow.

Can an employer ban PTO usage as part of an employment agreement?

Hey folks, big fan of the sub here with a question. My team has had a few people leave without notice, and as a result I'm the only one left who is capable of completing certain tasks. Out of the blue after 3 years of positive reviews, my manager swings in with a “Performance Improvement Plan”. It lays out how despite his glowing opinion of my work up until the moment we got short staffed, I have several issues with my performance, the key issue of which is my PTO usage. For context : Last year my employer did not provide sick leave because they were not legally required to, so employees were instructed to document sick time as PTO. My manager also routinely “gave out” free Fridays, which we later learned were being counted against our PTO. As a result, I had a huge total last year (which I…

Are there legitimate sites which track employer culture?

If I could speak of discriminatory or predatory behavior of previous employers in the middle east and India, I would. But it's usually frowned upon in the professional world. Engineering ethics also frown upon it. There are ways to handle such situations but sometimes nothing works. I often wonder if I had a way to warn talent that these employers manage to trap, I would use it.

Fast food sucks

So… you guys are always posting horror stories so I'll share mine.. I used to work for a famous SUB shop as the general manager. One day construction crews outside burst a water main and we had no water. I knew we had to close due to food service places need running water in order to operate. So I called my district mgr to let him know before I closed up. He literally told me: “fuck no you're not closing! You have water in the back of the toilet you can use! You do NOT ever close your store! ” To which I told him, “fine, I'll just call the health dept and see what they say about it” Called them, they obviously told me under no circumstances should I remain open. And I gave him my dm's name and number. I called my dm back with the news and…

What does unemployment benefit look like in your country?

In the UK I got £320 in Universal Credit and they gave me about £250 for rent. My house share was £350 so I only had £220 a month to spend for food and extras. Luckily my food is £120 a month. Netflix and phone is £25 a month. The last £100 is for toiletries, clothes, or maybe if I want to visit a friend and get a coffee/beer/snack. Its not a fancy life but its tolerable. The only kicker is if you dont find a job within three months they start to harass you and make your life difficult so you end up taking any old crappy job just to not be sent on a training course for idiots. In the long run I want to upskill and escape the bad jobs situation – the issue is my depression is terrible right now and I am barely functioning. ——…

Company changing my job without my consent!

I have been at a Fortune 500 company for the past 10 years and have been very loyal to my company until they started doing things that gave me a lot of uncertainty. For example, At the start of the pandemic, they made our entire department reapply for our jobs.. I get the country was going through a pandemic and lot of people lost their jobs, but this was not what I was expecting… Well now, they are realigning again, not even 15 months later, and not allowing us to have any say in our new positions. These new job requirements are going to require me to travel out of state a lot and be away from home more often. When I gave my preference of territory/role to my leaders and gave details about why I prefer one territory over the other I was really taken aback when their response…
