It's hypocritical. The working class has already been sacrificed for the past forty years. We all know the sacrifices required won't touch the well to do. Russia tried to unite its disjointed country with such rhetoric back in 1914 and it resulted in taking part in a World War, and then in a revolution and civil war.
In very simple terms, big tech corporations (though many offer seemingly “free” products) make huge amounts of money out of products which often are available (but way less advertised) as an open-source counterpart. This huge amount of capital taken out of the common people is then used to invest in assets, inflating them and outpricing us. Conversely, the open source movement is about working for a common good, empowering both developers and users by keeping the product of labor from being capitalized and funneled into billionaires. *Sorry for my English, as it's not my first language.
How to make employees feel valued
In addition to competitive pay(living wage and beyond!), what are a few ways your boss has made you like/love working for them and/or at the company?
I know this isn't technically anti work but it's anti conventional job. I have an opportunity to move across the country and be a backpacking guide with decent pay. I'm very excited about this possibility as it would free me up to explore and live a more nomadic lifestyle. My parents view this as “not a real job” and want me to go back to college where I was incredibly unhappy to get a degree so I can have health insurance in the future. I experienced a cube-farm a couple times in my life and never want to set foot in one again.
I passed it up because the highest they could pay was 12 an hour. Apparently I made a good impression on the owner, because six months later I'm getting a call that they're hiring again and this time they're MEETING MY WAGE. Not just for me but the new starting wage is 15 an hour specifically because of the interview he had with me back then where I bought up the cost of living in the area being closer to 17 an hour. It's not much and it's not enough but fuck yeah, I guess I made some positive change? I might go for it. I've been doing freelance work to make ends meet but I could use some structure in my life.
it’s that the government and news media is convincing you that people who take care of your kids all day while you’re at work should make poverty wages. That the people that coach your little one’s clubs and extracurriculars before/after school and on weekends should be living pay check to pay check. But I guess it’s your tax dollars so ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Also FYI, if the classroom teachers are making $100K, then the salary for admin and district leaders must be making (sometimes) 10x that much.
