Fuck teaching, fuck covid, fuck work
I'm sorry in advance, I'm on mobile, I'm ill as fuck and I need to rant so please excuse any mistakes! That being said, I'm an ESL teacher (English as second language) in South East Asia, so I really shouldn't have any excuse. Back in October 2020 I moved out here to teach in public schools. The company I worked for was pretty dodgy and were definitely under paying us, so mid April 2021 I got a second job at a private English centre (better pay, smaller classes, higher level, it was a no-brainer really), with the plan to quit the first one at the end of the academic year. As usual in office environments, someone came in with a cold last week and boom it hit me on Friday. I did have social plans on Saturday but we’re cut short bc of being so crappy. But because of this I’d already asked for my shift to start later so I could get ready for work and not rush being ill and sleepy. But the work app has alerted me this morning that my shift started as usual, and I’m here thinking. Day off? I’m a snotty mucus ball of hate right now anyway, and I know it’s going to mess my probation up if I don’t come in. But what’s more important my health or my job? My team are severely understaffed as it is so I would be very surprised if I get fired for it but I’m trying to find any motivation to go in. Any tips…
TLDR: You have to do 2/5 days in the office. How would you space them to make it suck the least? Background: My department have been successfully working from home since 2020. I joined late 2021, moving from a customer facing position, so WFH was a blessing! But now that we’re apparently pretending that the pandemic is over we’re being asked to do 2 days minimum in the company owned office. There are team members who live at the other end of the country (UK), AFAIK they’re not being asked to do the same. My home setup is perfect. Lighting, ergonomics, temperature, all set to my needs. The office is loud, too hot/too cold, full of people, and the extra commute (though admittedly short) is becoming increasingly expensive with fuel costs. We had a few wage theft scandals in Australia, over the last few years, and his fast food takeout place was ground zero for one of the first. He was done over for tens of thousands of dollars for underpaying his staff, his delivery drivers etc. It was all over the papers and triggered a nationwide investigation into the chain. Just wanted to share. I live in Scotland. During the last two years I have been a “key worker” within a social care setting in a caring roll. I like my job and though it can be challenging at times it makes me feel good about helping others. In Scotland our leader (First minister) pledged a £500 bonus to all frontline NHS and social care workers who had been put in danger by continuing to support the most vulnerable and sick members of our society during the pandemic. On the surface this sounds great, until you find out that it would be taxed! So £500 becomes about £380… no big deal. Its still extra money I tell myself.
