I want to work at Subway.

But I can't. I can't work at Subway, because it would be akin to shooting myself in the leg. It would slow me down, and nearly bleed me dry. I want to work at Subway, or any food service job really. The pay is just not good enough to support a family with however. Instead, I'm stuck at a dead end job, where I mix a bunch of dangerous chemicals in a vat, and ship them out to a different building so a different team of people can put those mixed chemicals into a big conveyer belt of machinery to make vitamin gummies. I fucking hate it so much. If this company were to just one day explode, nothing substantial would happen out of it. Sure, a lot of people would lose their jobs, but they would also lose the necessity to work at such a soul draining place. I'm…

Boss is screwed

One year ago we got a new director. He ruined everything good about our 5 person department. Made unnecessary changes, told us how to do things (the wrong way) because he was not knowledgeable about our field. Every single meeting I had with him I told him that his management style wasn't being well received. He didn't change. He created an HR policy without telling us, locking us out of the schedule calendar. He would sit in the lobby to try to catch us coming to work late! WE ARE SALARIED! I feel bad, he wasn't taught how to manage the right way. I went over his head to his boss, not receptive. Other team members did the same, nothing. Ok fine, I left! I told him I was going to leave bc he ruined the department and that others were hot on my tail. I found a completely different…

Can’t tell if my work lied about my benefits or not…

I work at a dental office as a support staff. When I interviewed & got hired, it was clearly stated to me from my then manager, that after 6 months I get free basic dental care Well, It's been 6 months, made a hygiene appointment and got it done. Come payment time ($320) I tell reception it should all be covered under our basic benefit plan, they pass it off to one our higher ups (but not manager)who I'll call S. Next day I ask S if she can look into my file as it still says I owe money in my PT ledger. She says her & the dentists will have to talk about it, which confused me cause what is there to talk about? Come in today & she pulls me into the office & says “So after 6 months, we cover 50% & you pay the rest.…

I quit my job last month! Now it’s just an empty shell of what my store used to be

So my Boss bought the small company I worked at last year in June. Ever since then the Job went to crap. Our job is the type of job that gets busy during the holiday. We got into it several times and he wrote me up. but here is the thing. he didn't actually give it to me for three weeks. He left my write-up on his desk with my name on it from Dec 21st to January 10th. When I knew I needed to quit was when he cut my hours to 10 hrs a week. When enough employees quit he had to raise my pay to over 20 dollars an hour to keep me. Now after the busiest time of the year, he tells me in a text message that he couldn't afford me but refused to lay me off. So I go in and work my five…

Lunch breaks should be paid

This isn't that revolutionary, but lunch breaks should be paid. I recently calculated my “real wage” by taking into account all the unpaid time I spend before/after the workday related to my job. I.e. things like commuting that I would not be doing otherwise. It was depressing! Anyway, I realized that 30 min of that time is during the workday: my lunch break. Yes, I'm technically not physically working during that time – but it's not like I get to go home or anything. I'm just sitting in the parking lot, yards away from the office, eating a cold lunch in my car. You would think a worker receiving enough sustenance to finish the work day benefits the company too. (Also, this applies to breaks too. I just work in a setting where non-lunch breaks are legally protected but not enforced/the norm.)

I’m finally in a place that truly appreciates me, and I thought I’d share.

My 3-month review in December was fairly standard, not much that I haven't heard before from past employers. This is an office position, but I came from 20+ years of retail and service work experience, and I think you all know what that does to a person's mentality. I've unfortunately developed some toxic habits of being paranoid about my perceived fragile position in a company, and feeling the need to protect myself when I feel I've toe'd some imaginative line. So, as I was sitting there feeling fairly jaded to the feedback, my boss threw me a curve-ball. He said, “I can tell you've been under-appreciated in your past roles, and I'm hoping we can change that.” What he said stuck with me, however, I've heard similar things from past managers; describing how much they appreciate my hard work, but it's always hollow words or empty gestures. I asked about…
