So I work for a marketing agency and I’m trying to push for a raise and promotion for one of my direct reports. I brought this to the director of my department and they were all for the promotion and when I started asking about what the raise would be…they launched into a whole speech about how promotions are not always tied to raises and that employees shouldn’t just expect that. Whenever I’ve gotten a promotion in the past, it’s always been tied to a raise. Without a raise, they’re just throwing more work at you without compensation. For some background, I graduated from college with a degree in graphic design last fall, and I did an internship for a few months after that which was required for my graduation. I graduated college with honours having an 87% average and was told that my portfolio looked great by plenty of people. My work was always praised by my teachers and I tried my best and applied myself. I was fully remote during my internship and got a letter of recommendation which was also highly praising. When I finished my internship I thought “Well, how hard can it be to get a job now?” Jesus christ, I had no idea of the depression that awaited me. I have applied to over 600 jobs after that. I had orientation for a brand new job yesterday. The orientation was 2 hours away and my company required me to bring photo ID, my original college degree, social security card and vaccine proof. When I left, the HR representative and I both realized she still had all these documents. I was already on the turnpike. She said she would FedEx the documents to my home Express delivery but that I was cleared for work. Problem is, she clicked the checkbox on the FedEx delivery that says “signature required and photo ID age 21 or older.”. I don't have a photo ID. It's in the package. I was supposed to start work today. Now the company is angry because I called off since I have no photo ID since I have to sit home to sign for the package that is coming to my house to get my photo ID…

So I work in IT for a globally recognised brand and yesterday we received our year salary increase notification. The increase on the face of it was pretty modest at 4.5%, however this is quite some way below the current and projected rate of inflation in the UK where I am based. It also comes off the back of 2 record breaking years for the company in the face of the pandemic with revenue and profits increasing dramatically each year. Now I'll be honest i earn a good wage (close to £80k) but this has annoyed me somewhat. I joined the company in 2020 and in real terms my value is lower now than it was back then. Is my annoyance justified? I'm unsure what to do at the moment.
