How can I show appreciation for employees without being insulting or tacky?

Hey guys! I work for a pretty small company supporting developmentally disabled and mentally ill individuals. A couple of our clients are not doing great and are requiring a lot of extra work- both in hours and just dealing with some tough behavioral issues on shift. I just see a lot of posts of insulting and tone deaf “gifts” from employers and don’t want to make that mistake! How do I find the balance between something I can afford and something that actually shows my appreciation? Not sure if this extra info matters, but a lot of our staff is African and many are new to this country and still learning English (did you guys know that most African people speak at LEAST three languages?!) , so there’s some cultural differences I’ve been learning. Also asking directly how I can help or show appreciation tends to get a polite but…

I am witnessing the slow collapse of capitalism in my daily experience

I work for a company that fabricates conveyor belts for other manufacturing companies, by hand despite the fact that the companies will use machine to utilize our products (wackiness). Customers include Hostess, Nestle, Mars Chocolate, etc. Over the pandemic we’ve had many shipments of base material stuck either in some canal overseas or at customers somewhere on the coast. I do mostly clerical work, and half of my goddamn job is now explaining to salespeople that we are doing our best but we cannot keep up with both new orders while also keeping up with late prefers when we simply don’t have the material nor the manpower necessary to fabricate their belts. I have seen grocery shelves in my area empty, many from the companies that utilize our products. We have had repeated threats from customers that they will look elsewhere for business, and I don’t know what to tell…

Finally a nugget of gold!

I constantly lurk on this sub, and have been looking for a job since January. Well at least a different job. I love all the redflags people have brought up when interviewing or working for people. With all the magical things people have brought up I have held my ground during 2 or more interviews a week since January 1st, dodging many bullets until I finally received an offer from an organization that meets everything I need and want; no weekends, no necessary overtime, no ridiculous policies. They are giving me over 2 months paid off a year, full benefits, an extremely generous earnings package. They pushed the idea of a true work life balance and insisted it was important for mental health and performance. I would have settled on anything I got back in January if it weren't for this sub. Love you guys! Find your fairy!

[Rant] Promised Internship revoked 2 weeks before start

Been working as a Tax intern for 3 months. Was promised by HR and the head of the department that I would have a summer internship. I turned down multiple internship opportunities from different companies due to the false confidence my current company provided. I was supposed to sign the paperwork this week. The summer internship was revoked today. Now I need to scramble to find a full time internship or job. All corporations lie. I understand I should have been more cautious by having other offers kept on the table, but I didn't. I trusted them. This is what I get I guess. So very tired of corporate lies and fake promises.

What happened at work that made you realize you’re giving way too much effort for your employer?

Like the title says – what made you realize that you’re giving your employer way more than they deserve from you?

Got written up for fabricated actions of my girlfriend

I was working as a line cook at a regional chain that renovated old buildings into multi restaurant/bar/theater/hotels and the one I was at was a former elementary school. I shared a car with my girlfriend, so one day she arrived early to pick me up and went and to see a movie at the theater on the other side of the school while she waited for me. I had a normal shift and picked her up from one of the bars in the same compound she had been waiting at with her friend. She was tipsy for sure, but far from drunk. The next day when I come in for my shift my manager pulls me aside and tells me that my girlfriend had assaulted some other guests during the movie and that I had to sign a form acknowledging that this was my first verbal warning. I was…

Is it legal for my company to downgrade my pay after I quit?

I live in Michigan & work at subway. I recently gave them my two weeks, but I had to call off on one of my days because I was sick. Gave them a notice hours before my shift started, but my manager texted me later in the night and told me they were just going to let me go early. On my last paycheck I just received today I noticed they changed my pay to less than minimum wage & I was making $13 before. I’ve heard from past coworkers that he has also done this to them as well after quitting. Is this legal?

Tbh I think that part time is a scam.

I think that part time is a scam the fact that they can give a full grown adult only 20 to 15 hours a week just so they don’t have to pay benefits it’s kind of insane. And also jobs that only give you 30 hours a week literally pay you enough to barely live but then only give you enough hours so you can’t go get a second job. I strictly think everyone should hire full-time and if you choose to go part time you may but only offering part time position is a scam

I’m going to be so done with my job soon

3 months and I really can't wait to be done of it. I've been at my full time job as a custodian for 10 months this week. The worst kind of custodial jobs to work and take is ones at schools. Where, you're subjected to be fired by generally anyone. Your supervisor, the head custodian. The other supervisor, the maintenance director. You've got all of these other directors that can get you fired by complaining. You've got teachers who you clean after that could do the same if enough complaints are received. Students can definitely get you fired over anything if they want to put the effort into it. It's as bad as being in a Wal-Mart and answering to a handful of bosses. Because at a school, everyone to some degree, is your boss. It's a demeaning and a degrading kind of feel that discourages you trying to put…
