What laws should every employee know?
I’m considering a job that involves writing about workplace laws and advocacy for employees. I have a lot of ideas, but I thought I would get some interesting perspectives here. What are some work-related laws you think every employee should know? What work-related facts, policies, etc do you have the strongest opinion on? (This is for the US, but comparisons to other countries are appreciated)
I've been thinking a lot about minimal wage, living expenses and worker exploitation after joining this sub. If the current system can be changed where the government pays for universal early childcare, universal healthcare and unemployment (I know, may not happen in our lifetime, but one can dream) and we all know the government can afford these… And… here's the change that could dramatically reduce worker exploitation – get rid of the 'contractor' designation. As a company, when you want work done, you can't put all the expenses on the so called contractor. I'm thinking gig economy would be very different because companies would have to pay competitive wages and cannot outsource legitimate expenses to the working class. As much as being a contractor sounds appealing (higher hourly rates and flexibility), it's really often a trap… and if you're benefiting from being a contractor, you're usually getting paid a lot…
Hello everyone. I was just curious where i might find the laws for houston texas. And any other laws like federal that i should know in order to protect myself from corporations and shit like that. currently i work for an oil and gas and i might get fired possibly from how the situation looks like. They didn’t want to pay me my worth for the 4 jobs that i am doing currently. So currently i am looking for a job like a madman, because i can’t survive half a month without a job. So trying to brace for the impact that might come. Thank you.
Relief coming late 3 days in a row
So to give some context, colleague and i work day and night shift withing a 24/7 environment. He does 12 hours and i do the other 12. He does day, i do night. Recently for the past 3 consecutive days he has been on average 20 minutes late to relieve me. What's upsetting is the fact that he doesnt message me indicating such after we had numerous discussions about this. He doesnt even apoligize for being late. It's making me sick. What should i do?
My manager informed me today that anyone that clocks in early or stays late will have their time fixed to say they came in/left at their scheduled time. So, if someone is scheduled at 5AM and clocks in at 445AM, he will over ride it to show they clocked in at 5AM because “hes tired of fixing peoples time”. I asked some of the other floor managers if this was legal and no one knows. I was hoping someone on here could clarify.
Got hired again with a previous employer for a different role, fully WFH. Put in the 2 weeks notice with my current job and worked the 2 weeks, employment there ended on March 18th. Okay cool the new job starts March 28th, 9 days to relax, surely enough time for the new job to have me set up. Well, I’m not so sure about that. It’s now April 11th and I have not started working yet. The manager for my new role failed to input a request for a company laptop, phone, and other things I needed until April 6th. I have yet to receive my equipment. They won’t let me use my computer, even though I used it before when I worked for them in the past. I don’t understand how management can drop the ball that hard. I should’ve had a paycheck by now. Bills are piling up,…
How to quit a job I just started at?
There were definitely some red flags during the first couple weeks (I've worked here since late January) like the boss telling me that my coworkers were idiots or they did a horrible job on something. Then pay started becoming more complicated and there have been 2 or 3 times that I didn't get my pay on time-once it was a week late which sucked for my bills. And now I'm just ready to quit. So y'all, how do I go about doing this?
