My Workplace is a Biohazard and Management Could Care Less

I am a longtime lurker but I have never posted here before. I have worked some terrible retail jobs in my day but my past weekend at my current job has been unbearable. My store has had a mice infestation for months. At first, it wasn't too big of a deal, just a scattered mouse caught in a trap, then about a month ago, we began to discover mouse feces and urine EVERYWHERE including our store shelves and on products. I brought this to my store manager who brought it to his boss who said she does not care. Interesting… we then have a visit from her boss and inform him of the increasing issue with the mice and again, he does not care. Finally, things went to shit on Saturday when I noticed an absolutely foul smell coming from our storage room which we are told to never go…

Employer kind of lied about rate of pay during rehire?

Let me explain: I'm a Canadian from Ontario working in a manufacturing plant. Back in september I left my job to relocate to a new city but it ended up not being able to find a house in time. 3 months later I was not enjoying the drive to the next town over so I emailed my old group leader asking if I could return to my old job for the same rate of pay I was at before leaving (I worked there for 3 years and was making $23.07 per hour) My group leader didn't even email me back.. Instead he had my friend who worked on the same line text me saying “HR will be in contact with me within the week”. I went through the normal interview and 2 days later I got a call from HR. It was a woman we will call Sarah who told…

Feigning a British accent in the US service sector

Recently learned that some people from non-English speaking countries make a conscious choice between British English and American English when learning the language and many choose British English for better treatment / tips / raises. Wondering if any Americans have tried the same

Holidays off so some, not all. How to Help.

So for some industries, there are set days off as holidays a year. We all know the joke, bank and post office gets the most. The rest get a few. But everyone needs to realize some get NONE! If you work retail or food/beverage you may not get any holidays off, And it is super hard to request those days because everyone wants them. Labor day especially is such a joke to these workers. The laborers have to work harder on their own holiday! My main point here is, everyone can help with this problem. We know these places stay open because there is money to be made, so simple solution. If you think it should be a holiday for everyone (which many should) then plan your days off properly and DONT GIVE THEM BUISNESS. I know there are exceptions on both side ie: emergencies or people who want to…

Interviewing – being rejected on experience

What is the point of bringing people in to multiple interviews, sometimes have them create presentations and then tell them that they missed out due to relevant experience. If you're going to reject someone on that basis surely you might as well reject them before or at the first interview. not multiple rounds in. Twice in the last week I've had 3 interviews (+ a presentation in 1) and then get told I don't have relevant experience for the role. Its not like they only saw my CV for the first time after the final interview. Infuriating

References from past employment sabotaged me

Hey all! So I recently applied for a different job, clinical research. I put on my application a list of my previous employment. It also asked if they can contact my previous employer to which I said “yes.” The other options were “no” and “not at this time.” I feel like I shot myself in the foot by saying “yes” because I didn’t want to seem sus. So basically, I had the most amazing interview experience and my prospective employer and teammates liked me for a full time research position. I had an impressive resume (pre-med school stuff) – sorry for bragging but pertains to how I somehow didn’t get the job. The only thing is that when I gave my 3 months notice for my previous employer (left in August), they were beyond pissed bc they couldn’t find anyone to pay a non living wage for grunt clinical work…

Drove 2 hours for a five minute interview

I reached out to a company I knew was hiring, they emailed me back and after some back and forth we decided on an interview date. They knew I would be driving up from two hours away just for this interview and also would be taking a day off work. Well I arrive and after waiting a few moments was told the person from management I was emailing with wasn’t able to attend so I sat in the lobby while an employee working the position I applied for glanced at my resume and asked me a handful of questions. “Do you have experience in this field/when are you moving to the area and will be able to start/what hours are you looking for/are you okay with early morning shifts.” All of which could’ve been asked and answered via email, I didn’t get his name and he said he’d talk with…
