Employee retention 101
I'm a 55, soon to be 56yo man and have worked either part-time (while going to college) or full-time continuously since age seventeen. Though I work only three days a week and make OK money, I feel existentially tired all of the time and have for years. It's not like a tired, sleep and feel better tired, but a tired to the very core of your being. Before you ask, I'm not depressed, just super fucking sick of the grind, with its toxic coworkers, stress, and having to drag one's self out of bed to feel more dead than alive. Mostly, it's about having a career that I have no absolutely no passion for but know that to have any hope of retirement one day, (my retirement savings is not much), I have to keep my nose to the grindstone and continue being a wage slave. Not drama here, but…
but they work hard for what they have!
My degree is expensive because my dad had to pay international student prices. After earning my degree, working as a biologist I felt under appreciated, overworked, hopeless… I wasn’t able to see a brighter future. And today, I received $120aud for a selfie. Why do we even care anymore?
A Teams Group for calling out sick?
My company (which I generally like) have decided to make a teams chat dedicated to calling out sick, all employees are to use it when calling out, which means all OTHER employees can see it when you do. A quick search came up with it's “possibly being very illegal”. Does this violate ADA, EOCC, and/or HIPAA? Is this in fact illegal to do? I'm in the Pacific Northwest of America.
Who sets up your plans for the future?
You or your boss? There is a story of a man who owned a company, he was successful and bought a brand new car, V8 engine with upgrade packages. The employee comes up to him and admires his car, talking about it for some time. The boss turns to him and say, “Well Jim, if you work hard and focus your time and energy on work, next year I'll buy myself another one.
