Has this subreddit brought any change?

I don't mean to sound like I'm belittling everybody's efforts on posting how we are and have been getting exploited, but Sharing the information we know as a fact amongst ourselves is like being a group of people in an elevator that goes nowhere built by mirrors and what we say only echoes. We might once in a while appear on the front page of reddit, in some website article and be invited to some news channel. Shouldn't we discuss the very means we're trying to bring change instead of echoing inside this elevator? Excuse my arrogance if I'm wrong though this feels like nothing more than a controlled environment we rant in then go back to work like anything changed.

Wage Question

I’m trying to get a grasp on the idea of fair wages because of all the “discuss your salary” posts. Should pay be based on a salary schedule that’s reflective of education, training, additional training/certifications, and/or experience? Or should everyone doing the same job make the same? I’m just trying to get a handle on the concept. My nephew was complaining that he’s only getting $17 an hour at an independent coffee house (think Starbucks but WAY more pretentious). He’s upset because another barista who does his same job makes $27 an hour, but she’s been there 12 years. He claims she has no additional responsibilities. So, I don’t know. Please educate me (politely)!

Should I call the labor department???

I just picked up my paycheck from a place I worked at for about a week. My name is misspelled and the address is completely wrong( a different state). Also, I didn’t get the training wage. The manager handed me the check and I told him about the mistake on the name and address and he made me write the correct thing on a piece of paper. The place was absolutely awful so I just stopped showing up. There were so many red flags. My main concern is someone getting my w2 at the address that is not mine and the fact that I didn’t get paid the training wage. What is your advice on this? Thank you!

Friend just got fired in what seems like a vendetta.

She told me she went into work on Sunday and they said they were going to make a revised schedule for the rest of the week. The original schedule had her working several days during the week. The new schedule took her off every day she was working. Next thing she knows she gets called to a work meeting thinking it’s just a normal meeting but it was because they were firing her for not showing up to work. She was so confused when they told her because in the past they called if she wasn’t there asking if she was ok/why she was running late. They just said “you should’ve known to go off both schedules”. She spoke with her coworkers who did the same thing and none of them got fired. Wtf

Yesterday my boss apologized

Without going into too many specifics, we work in an education-related field and offer a few different kinds of classes. I am an admin assistant and the only person in-office on the weekend. For the past year that I’ve worked here, we’ve had as many as three classes going on at once. They all start at the same time (as soon as we open) and I am responsible for making sure the students are set up at that time. I check them in, take attendance, provide them with class materials (which I also make along with one other person), make sure the instructors show up, proctor and grade all of their exams, and remind them about homework assignments and class days. This is all in addition to my other, more typical admin duties. Classes are not our only service and we do have other appointments and such which also happen…

Is this thing in our union contract illegal?

I work for a large unionized chemical company which requires 12 hour swing shifts, but the thing that confuses me is that in our union contract, we are required to be at work 30 minutes before our shift starts. Now, this isn’t like 30 minutes to dick around and get dressed or whatever, this is dressed and ready to work half an hour before so we can have a 2 minute conversation about what happened the previous shift and give the person leaving a chance to change (they still have to stay the whole shift). We don’t get paid for this (as stated in our contract), but are somehow supposed to be compensated with an hourly “shift differential” which equates to less than half of what being paid for it would give us. My union rep doesn’t give a shit, in fact even fought me on the subject when I…

Amazon event Nashville. Come protest.

A friend of mine and I work as stagehands and they work for two companies, I work for one of them. The second one they work is currently setting up an event at Music City Center here in Nashville. Wanted to let yall know Amazon is doing stuff here in Nashville and it would be a perfect opportunity for those of us in the area to try to attend and make our voices heard, whatever way possible. That's all, have a nice day.

What an excellent summary of this movement.
